Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin covers for the surface of your teeth that improve their appearance. They are either porcelain or resin composite material.

What are the benefits of veneers?

Veneers improve the following conditions:

  • Discolored or stained teeth

  • Worn down teeth

  • Chipped or broken teeth

  • Misaligned teeth

  • Uneven teeth

  • Irregularly shaped teeth

  • Teeth with gaps

If you feel embarrassed when you smile, you’re a great candidate for veneers. They can change the size, shape, and color of misshapen or stained teeth, giving you a sparkling new smile.

What happens during the veneer procedure?

From start to finish, veneers usually take three dental visits. At the first visit, explain the problems with your teeth and the changes you would like to see. You’re there because you want to improve your teeth and your smile, which can dramatically improve your appearance. Dr. Van Kooten then takes X-rays of the areas you would like to improve and may take impressions of your teeth. She determines whether you are a good candidate for veneers.

At the second visit, Dr. Van Kooten applies local anesthesia or numbs the area of your mouth where she’s working. She then removes a very thin layer of enamel from the affected teeth. Next, she makes a model of the tooth or teeth that you want to improve and sends it to a dental lab where the veneer is manufactured. If you can’t wait until the veneer comes back for your “mouth makeover,” Dr. Van Kooten can apply a temporary veneer for you.

At the final visit, Dr. Van Kooten gently places the veneer on top of the affected tooth to see if it fits properly and if the color matches with the surrounding teeth. She adjusts the veneer, if needed, by trimming it to ensure proper fit. Next, she cleans the tooth, applies an adhesive, and places the veneer on the tooth. She then shines a special light on the veneer, which hardens the adhesive quickly. Lastly, she removes any excess adhesive and makes any final adjustments. The exciting result is just ahead: looking in the mirror at your brand new smile!
