• September is National Gum Care Month

At Lighthouse Family Dentistry in Monterey, we are aware that the early stage of periodontal disease, also called gingivitis, can be hard to recognize. Early signs of gum disease include swollen gums and bleeding. During the month of September, there is a national campaign taking place to spread awareness around the health problems of periodontal disease.

At Lighthouse Dentistry, we want to play our part in National Gum Care Month. Early recognition and action are recommended to prevent health problems. Here are some early warning signs:

When gingivitis is ignored, it can turn into  “periodontitis” (which means “inflammation around the tooth”). The gums end up pulling away from the teeth and create spaces (called “pockets”) that often become infected. The toxins from bacteria and the body’s natural response to the problem will cause the bone to break down as well as the connective tissue that holds teeth in place. When left untreated, the tissue, bones, and gums that support the teeth are destroyed.

Some risk factors include:

It’s important to get periodontitis treated to avoid infections. Treatments vary depending on the type and severity of the gum disease. There is much research between diseases and periodontal diseases. Some studies show that severe gum disease may be associated with several other health conditions such as diabetes or stroke. It is possible that there could be no warning signs of gum disease. That is why regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations are crucial. Treatment is contingent on how far the condition has progressed. Staying on top of dental care at home is very important to help keep periodontal disease from turning into a significant health problem.
