• Best and Worst Halloween Candy for Your Teeth

    on Oct 1st, 2017

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s best to be mindful of the candies that we choose to eat because some of the ingredients can cause some teeth problems. The bacteria in your mouth actually eats the sugar and leftover food in your mouth. This causes a weak acid to form which could lead to cavities. Brushing and flossing twice a day is a good place to start.  Just being aware of the candies that we enjoy should keep this fun holiday cavity free!

Here is a list of popular Halloween candies and the effects that they can have on your teeth.

Chocolate

Chocolate is most likely your best bet, which is a good thing since it’s the most popular Halloween candy. It washes off teeth easily which is a bonus when preventing cavities. Keep in mind that dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate.

Sticky and Gummy Candies

These candies can wreak havoc on your mouth. They’re certainly worth avoiding. Because they’re sticky, it’s really challenging to remove “the leftovers” from teeth. The bacteria that grows there could be the scariest part of Halloween!

Hard Candy

Hard candies are worth avoiding because they can actually break teeth. You also tend to keep these candies in your mouth longer allowing the sugar to get into your saliva and wash all over your teeth.

Sour Candy

Sour candy contains a lot of acids that can damage and weaken the harder shell of your teeth. This could make your teeth prone to cavities.

There are more satisfying and healthier options that you could also be considering eating on Halloween.
